Kitchen Help Wanted

While others may disagree... I don't mean in the cooking sense.

Source
I painted the walls in my kitchen recently quite a while ago and had visions of it instantly turning into something like this gorgeous retro kitchen from Meadowbrook Farm.

It didn't happen. Some bits I liked... like the valence I made. What I didn't take into account was the lack of wall space on one side of the kitchen compared to the other.

Which means: YELLOW side.

Not-so-yellow side.

More not-so-yellow side.

I think I need to put some larger items on the shelves and reduce the small stuff.

I also have some bright frames and bits to go up on the wall to the right.

Other than that... I am stumped and stalled out.

I don't want to paint the backsplash or any of the cupboard surfaces. Hmm.

I need your help!! Any ideas out there friends?? Besides dynamite, that is.

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  1. You asked for it !
First - I love the valence. What fabric did you use because it is in just my colors and I would love to find something like it?
Second - My kitchen has yellow walls and white cabinets just like yours.
Third- the window below the eat sign might be able to have some color added to it
Fourth - One of the things I notice right away in the Meadowbrook Farm kitchen was the colorful towels hung on the rod. I have some colorful moda hand towels hanging over the handles of my fridge and oven to bring in color.

Have fun with the last details of your wonderful kitchen.

  2. Thanks Carol! I could put a towel holder on the side of the island - I've got a great yellow tea towel I could put there! :D

    1. I forgot to add... I found the fabric on ebay. I had a quick look and didn't see it anymore. I'll keep my eyes peeled and send you a note if I can find some. :) I believe it was a Moda towelling fabric. It's about 18" wide and I cut it in half lengthwise and added some of their crochet/ric rac trim. I'll try to add a better picture of that. :)

  3. Hi Tracy:)
I love your kitchen! I too noticed the great retro towel in the meadowbrook one, but thats a small detail. I know you don't want to hear this, but have you considered removing the doors on some of the cabinets? Maybe the side with the oven/microwave, as it is a lot of solid white cabinet doors. You could paint the interior yellow, and show off some colourful pyrex or vintage stuff (hmmm...where would you find vintage stuff?). Just a suggestion, especially if you or your husband is handy. It really is quite lovely as is though!

    1. Thanks Arda, that's an idea too. I can't imagine parting with my storage though. I wonder if I painted the beadboard backs on the openings where the bowls are now? Hmmm. Thanks!

  4. PS. I LOVE your help wanted sign! I used to have a moms diner-open 24/7 sign, but my family took it too seriously! Maybe I'll paint it to read Help Wanted! Maybe they'll get the message!

If it was me, I would put prints or paintings in the window frame with lots of color, that would make a pow!The window frame over the table, the one with the cows, just an idea, is a lovely room though, I lve all the white its so fresh!

    1. Thanks Laurie!! I am keeping my eyes peeled for a BIG cow print for the dining room... perhaps 3 chicken prints for the kitchen! Great idea - thank you!

  6. Tracy I love it. I think it looks great. I have to agree with Carol the valance is adorable. What if you painted the soffits above the cabinet that would contast against your white cabinets and bring the eye up to the color. How about some colorful plates on the wall around the old chippy window for color. That's all I got because I love it the way it is. Chicken prints or a cute cow print would be great too. Love it Tracy.

  7. I read that you didn't want to paint the backsplash but painting the soffit and backsplash would bring more color to the whit side. It's a great kitchen, Tracy.

  8. I love it exactly as it is! It's so bright and cheerful and fun! I know, I'm no help at all. :}

  9. How about a white shelf the height of the door above the window frame. From the doorway to the corner shelf unit. Paint the shelf and the area above/behind it white. It would also give you some extra storage space. I love how happy your kitchen is.

  10. I love your bright pops of color and the big statement pieces - the EAT sign and the Help Wanted sign are too fun! Maybe you could use the end wall of the center island to display another large old sign, or something like that as another statement piece. Special pieces really stand out in your pretty kitchen!

  11. I was going to say to paint the bead board a color because you have a lot of white with the cabinets and the backsplash going on and then I read you didn't want to paint it. What about painting the ceiling a fun color like jadite green or the blue you already have on your island? Would you consider painting an accent color inside the moulding on the outside of the kitchen upper cabinet doors? I think it would look really cute. I love your kitchen. It's very cottage and the new sign is adorable. I hope you post pics after you make any changes.

  12. I LOVE your big bright kitchen, Tracy!! I might even be tempted to cook dinner if I had all that counter space....or not. :) My only thought is to paint the soffit yellow, but leave the openings white to highlight your brightly colored pieces. If I could crochet like you, I'd make vintage looking pot holders in all your accent colors to hang on the soffit and whip up a retro apron to hang at the end of your island. I love your lighting and the valence you created is perfect. You really don't need any help from us, you nailed it!

*As for the Help Wanted sign, where do I apply? I can't cook, but I'm a really good dish washer and I'm thinking it's time for a career move. Love the sign!

  13. Ok, Vickie stole my idea of painting the soffits and doing something with pot holders. Darn her, it's like she's in my head! BTW, I am in love with the Meadowbrook Farm kitchen also. I think yours is a very close 2nd in my heart though.

  14. Ya know, I think it's darling and so cheery.

Painting the soffits yellow would work, but if you didn't want to have some beadboard white and some yellow then that might not work.

I wonder if just minimizing the impact of the yellow on the other side would balance it more. Maybe putting up some larger white shelf unit or prints on the wall to the right of the little table (you said you had some stuff to go there anyway) would help reduce the yellow feeling on that side? Or maybe putting some colorful paper behind the glass in the "window" over the table would minimize the yellow a bit too?

    Anyway - I think it's fab.

  16. I am in love with all the bright white and the beadboard. I think you should just do a little tweaking. It looks great and really has the vintage vibe. The colors do pop against the white. You've done a great job. Wish I had that backsplash!

  17. Hello Tracy! I really love your kitchen, it's fantastic!
I think you got a very similar result to the one that inspired you, in fact, in a quick look to the post all the photos seem to be from the same kitchen. I see in both of them beautiful pops of colors but perhaps your shelves are very "tidy" and the others have much more things.
(oh, so hard for me trying to express in English, can you understand anything? haha).
    Besos!

  18. Tracy! Now that's my kind of kitchen! I'm in love with it top to bottom, left to right, color and style. Wow! So cheerful and bright in the best ways. I can't decide what I like best, but that sign is just the ticket! I've been making signs and trying to come up with the right thing that's not too complicated (I tend to always choose things that take too long) and Help Wanted is perfect! I may have to copy that (it's the sincerest form of flattery, you know!). I love the yellow, love the blue, love the touches of red in your kitchen. I'll send you a photo of something I did to bring color to my backsplash area without painting it or tiling or any of that. It might not be what you want to do, but it might spark some other idea.

  19. Ooooo - idea - what about a yellow rug under the sink area?

  20. The first thing I noticed was the contrast between her living room & your dining room. Her living room seems to be much lighter & your dining room appears to have a green cast to it. maybe that's what is throwing your eye off when you look towards the yellow side of your kitchen.

  21. Ok I don't know for sure but paint above the cabinets all the way around to get the yellow you want....the pulls could be a bolder color to get what you are looking for...and then their is the that other white surface, called a ceiling, I do not know what I am thinking for sure but what would happen in you painted above the cabinets and get a small bead board section and paint the yellow you are wanting.

can I say I have always wanted a ceiling that was bead board turquoise and then white on trim boards creating a arts and crafts look

  22. Hey Tracy! I was thinking paint the back splash, but you already nixed that... It looks beautiful as is and I especially love the yellow side. ♥

  23. But it is so bright and cheerful! I agree that if you put a few larger things on the shelf it would help. Maybe one of those old vintage toasters???? I love your bright colors. Also, what about a brightly colored tablecloth similar to your cute valance?

  26. I think it's lovely!!! Maybe add a few hits of black to ground the space a bit? I wonder if you cleared all the littles & just added in a few of your faves & the necessary stuff you use if you'd feel more settled with it? But I love it!!!

  31. How about a cute yellow dish towel hanging from the oven handle. Maybe trade out one aqua nick nack for a yellow one on that side. Honestly-I think it looks adorable. You are probably the only one who notices any imbalance. I think it looks so cheerful, sunny and vintage! I just love it.
